Establishment

Den 8 was established in 2018 under the vision and leadership of Jim Patterson, the BSA District Executive and Vanessa Love.  Vanessa initially approached Jim in order to offer assistance with any troop that needed a female leader, especially with the BSA allowing girls to join starting in January. Jim had other plans- he envisioned establishing a Den at the Yerwood Center. The leadership team was further expanded with the addition of Dr. Joe Rossello.  As the year progressed, additional more leaders joined the team.

Previous efforts to establish a Den with Boys and Girls Club/Yerwood Center were unsuccecssful as the Center did not have enough staff to run the events.  However, Jim, Vanessa and Joe persisted and held recruiting events to gain interest in the den.

Activities

Although newly established, the Den has been rather active.  Kids have learned done knot tying and practiced putting up a tent. The den also had the opportunity to participate in the BSA Connecticut Jamboree, which is held every 3 years. At the event, the Den enjoyed rock climbing, archery, pellet gun practice, and zip lining. Most recently, the Den headed over to the new Stamford Home Depot to make classic wooden cars!

Overall, we hope to provide the opportunity for the boys and girls in the Den to participate in events all over New England, learn skills for all aspects of life and get them ready for a secure and good future. Future activities include kayaking, canoeing, attending air shows, going camping, visiting museums in Boston and New York and exploring downtown New London. In addition we will have educational speakers and workshops in Waterbury that will give them hands-on teaching in construction and welding.
